Preparing Your Child for Exam Season: Tips for UK Parents

April 13th, 2023 by Lauren

As the beginning of the Summer term approaches next week, it signals exam season for many UK students. Some children will take this period in their stride. Others will look as though they are but internalise any worry or stress. And for some students, the period of intense studying and revision will be obvious.

For parents, this can be a challenging time, as you try to support your child while also giving them the space they need to succeed. To help parents with children sitting exams navigate this term, here are some tips for supporting your child during exam season:

Encourage healthy habits

The exam period can be a stressful time, so it’s important to encourage your child to take care of themselves both mentally and physically. There’s much talk of this in the corporate world, and as adults, so we shouldn’t forget this for children during intensive school periods. Make sure they are eating well, getting enough sleep, and taking breaks when they need to. Encourage them to exercise, whether it’s walking the dog, going for a swim or even a short stretch at home. Helping your child to establish healthy habits now will benefit them not only during exam season but also throughout their lives.

Create a study schedule

Creating a study schedule can be a great way to help your child stay on track during exam season. Work with them to create a plan that includes all their subjects and breaks in between. Encourage them to stick to the schedule as much as possible, but also remind them that it’s okay to make adjustments if necessary.

Provide a quiet study space

To help your child focus on their studies, provide them with a quiet study space. This could be a spare room, a corner of the living room, or even a quiet coffee shop. Make sure the space is free from distractions, such as the TV or other electronic devices.

Be supportive

During exam season, your child may be feeling stressed and anxious. Be there to offer them support and encouragement. Let them know that you believe in them and their abilities and that you’re proud of their hard work. Avoid putting too much pressure on them, as this can add to a child’s stress levels.

Reward hard work

When your child is working hard (at any time), it’s important to recognise and reward their efforts. This could be something as simple as a small treat or an afternoon off from studying. Celebrate their successes, no matter how small they may seem, and let them know that their hard work is paying off.

The Summer term and exam season can be a challenging time for both students and parents, but with a little preparation and support, your child can succeed. Encourage healthy habits, create a study schedule, provide quiet study space, be supportive, and reward their hard work. With these tips in mind, you can help your child navigate exam season and achieve their full potential.
